Meet the Woman Who’s Leading the Telecom Industry into the A.I. Future
Each time we make a mobile phone call, use the Internet, or send an email, we benefit from the work of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). With the rise of Artificial Intelligence, the ITU is actively implementing the new technology through the AI for Good platform to uncover practical ways to achieve sustainable growth and solutions that will leave a global impact.
On the evening of July 26, Vital Voices had the honor of hosting a fireside chat and reception with Doreen Bogdan-Martin, who made history as the first woman to serve as Secretary-General of the International Telecommunications Union in the history of the 150+ years of existence. A
A U.N. body, the ITU is a leading figure in the industry, advocating for and defending individuals’ right to communicate freely. The ITU was also responsible for standardizing Morse Code, which remains in use today by the military, aviation specialists, and communication operators.
During the event, attendees had the chance to engage and ask questions while Bogdan-Martin discussed how the ITU is working to increase the representation of women in the global technology space, the potential for AI to promote gender equality, and more. The Secretary-General has been instrumental in establishing the ITU’s ongoing commitment to the EQUALS Global Partnership for Gender Equality in the Digital Age.
Held at the Vital Voices Headquarters for Women’s Leadership, attendees had the opportunity to take a deep dive into the Secretary-General’s rise to the top and hear about lessons on leadership with special guest moderator Susan Ness, a Vital Voices board member and former member of the Federal Communications Commission, guiding the discussion.
