FRONTLINE VOICES: Youth Activist Evelyn Marina Mutzutz Alvarado on Youth Day

This Youth Day, we caught up with Evelyn Marina Mutzutz Alvarado in Guatemala. At 19, Evelyn is studying tourism at Universidad del Valle de Guatemala. She’s passionate about learning from people and nature, and is helping families improve livelihoods as president of the K’o Samuj Junan Women Entrepreneurs Association and a promoter of the Pachun Ecotourism project. Evelyn is a 2021 Voces Que Inspiran fellow who’s been organizing and energizing youth around the issues they care about. Here, she shares her advice and perspective on youth activism —

Para mí, el activismo en la juventud es muy importante, porque es una manera en que los jóvenes enseñan con el ejemplo. Es importante tanto para nosotros, para ponernos en marcha y descubrir nuestro propósitos como para la población, viendo a una generación nueva de líderes diversos e inspirar a otros jóvenes, a implementar sus ideas, incluso esas ideas que consideramos “locas” y demostrar que si se puede, de esta forma hacer que otros jóvenes se involucren en el activismo.

For me, youth activism is very important, because it’s a way for young people to teach by example. It is important both for us as young people to get going and discover our purpose, and also for the public to see a new generation of diverse leaders who inspire other young people and implement their ideas, even those ideas that we consider “crazy” — by showing that we can do this, we can get other young people involved in activism.

Una forma de hacer que los jóvenes se involucren, es escucharlos, hacerles ver las capacidades que tienen y brindarles las herramientas necesarias. Además, es importante que cuando se involucren se sientan cómodos, como un círculo de amistad y entre confianza hacerlos ver las capacidades que tienen y de esta forma trabajan por la causa.

One way to get young people involved is to listen to them, make them see the capabilities they have, and give them the tools they need. Also, it’s important that when they get involved they feel comfortable, like a circle of friendship and that enables trust that makes them see the capabilities they have and in this way work for the cause.

A veces los adultos tienden a no escuchar nos. Pero para que se unan a nuestra causa es importante hacerlos ver y presentarles los proyectos y causas que tenemos y en muchos casos las cosas que ya hacemos a la mayoría de adultos les gusta ver números y los resultados. Para que los adultos se unan a los jóvenes, es uniendo capacidades. Contagiarnos de ambas capacidades, de los adultos por su experiencia y profesionalidad y de los jóvenes la creatividad, imaginación para resolver problemas. Eso es lo que trato de hacer.

Sometimes adults tend not to listen to us. But for them to join our cause it is important to make them see and present them our projects and causes and the many things that we already do — the majority of adults like to see numbers and results. For adults to join young people, we need to join our capacities. We need to each spread our capacities to each other — from adults their experience and professionalism, and from young people our creativity and imagination to solve problems. This is what I am trying to do.

Los jóvenes que me inspiran, a pesar de todo, ponen en marchas las ideas a lo mejor con un poco de miedo, de vergüenza, pero al final lo hacen y cuando lo hacen lo hacen bien — las ideas ordinarias, las vuelven extraordinarias. Además, admiro que ya muchos jóvenes hacen activismo desde sus talentos y lo dan a conocer por medio de las redes sociales.

The young people who inspire me, despite everything, set the ideas in motion maybe with a little fear, of shame, but in the end they do it and when they do it they do it well — ordinary ideas, they make them extraordinary. I also admire that many young people already do activism using their talents and make it known through social networks.
